Many hours of airplane and car separate our daily life from this resort in Utah, USA. But the distance is part of the experience envisioned by the owners, a resort that helps to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of work life and reconnect with nature and adventures. The location is at the edge of the desert: mesas and sand towards the south, mountains and snow towards the north. A national park is a 20–minute drive away, but trails and natural attractions can be found already at walking and biking distance.
The masterplan is defined by a meandering road ascending from both sides of the main building. A hundred accommodation units are laid following the edge of the winding road to maximize unobstructed views to the landscape while leaving pockets of terrain, green corridors, and outdoor activities between the curves. The organic layout is instrumental in achieving the right balance between repetition and exclusivity, privacy and density, and separation and integration.
The centrally located main building emerges from the sand as an irregular rock formation, almost disappearing in the land on one end and raising up to triple–height on another side. The fan shape helps to frame the vast horizon of the West from different indoor and outdoor viewpoints. High walls cladded in red rammed earth resemble desert fins and help to organize the program in different sectors. Two of these walls define a slot canyon with a water stream. It is the outdoor pedestrian path that guides guests from the arrival square to the terraces and pools areas through wellness and retail.
