Set within the distinctive landscape of Jeju Island, this new museum explores the relationship between art, architecture, nature and digital experiences. The concept responds to the surrounding Gotjawal forest and volcanic landscape, allowing the architecture to become part of a wider journey through the site.

While the museum itself is conceived as an immersive and largely introverted world, its architecture is shaped by the landscape around it. The substantial building volume is broken down into smaller elements and shifting geometries, creating a more human scale while forming sheltered outdoor spaces, entrances and moments of connection with the surrounding nature.

Contrasts between natural and artificial, light and dark, open and enclosed guide the architectural concept. The exterior landscape becomes a counterpoint to the digital experiences within, with gardens, paths and the surrounding forest extending the museum experience beyond the building itself.

Sustainability and sensitivity to the site form an integral part of the design approach. The concept responds to Jeju Island’s subtropical climate, wind, rainfall, existing topography and volcanic geology, with the aim of minimizing changes to the natural terrain while creating a distinctive cultural destination rooted in its surroundings
