On the banks of the Kemijoki River, surrounded by Arctic stillness, Aino Resort is a private island retreat shaped by centuries of stories. First charted in 1712 as Vartiosaari, the island has served as a northern sentinel and refuge, and later as a summer retreat known as Ainola.

As part of the island’s transformation into Aino Resort, Studio Puisto was responsible for the renovation and interior design of the 11 accommodation rooms and suites, as well as Restaurant Vuo. The design approach was rooted in the character of the existing buildings, carefully balancing their history with a new hospitality experience.

The individually designed suites create a close connection to the surrounding landscape. River views, natural light and a warm, tactile material palette shape interiors that feel both refined and deeply comfortable. Natural wood, colours drawn from the surrounding nature and handcrafted details bring a sense of warmth and individuality to each room, while the Nordic design language remains understated and calm.

The renovation was guided by an ambition to work with what already existed. Materials were restored and reused where possible and complemented by locally sourced materials, custom-designed furniture and bespoke fabrics. Rather than erasing the layers of the past, the design allows them to become part of the new experience.
