Located off the coast of Rauma, Kuuskajaskari is a former military island shaped by its rugged maritime landscape, layered history and distinctive existing structures. The concept explores how the island can evolve into a unique destination while preserving the qualities that make it exceptional.
The vision introduces new ways to stay, explore and experience the island. Glamping and camping areas, a sauna village, floating cabins and adventure accommodation within the former barracks are complemented by improved harbour facilities and a network of themed trails. Existing structures, including the barracks and artillery halls, are adapted for new uses, while new interventions are carefully placed within the landscape.
At the heart of the concept is the principle of reuse before new construction. Existing buildings and building components are retained, repaired and repurposed wherever possible, reducing the need for new materials and supporting a more circular approach to the island’s development. Rather than becoming a backdrop, Kuuskajaskari’s military heritage remains an active part of its evolving identity.
The vision transforms the island into a diverse maritime destination where architecture supports rather than competes with the landscape. New reasons to visit are introduced while allowing Kuuskajaskari’s history, nature and distinctive atmosphere to remain at the heart of the experience.
