We all know that sleep plays a crucial part in our wellbeing, but many of us find it difficult to get enough Zzzs. When it comes to sleep,  people might have very different needs, one might find a bit of white noise very soothing while  one needs complete stillness to doze off. 


We asked our interior architects to give us some insights on how to create peaceful bedrooms with different people’s needs in mind. 


 What do you take into account when designing a space for sleep? 


The most important thing is to minimize sensory stimuli by taking into account multiple senses. For example wool as a natural material is simultaneously adjusting to body temperature, warming or cooling, is acousticly diminishing noise and is soft to the touch.  

 There are also different needs for lighting. Someone might need a pitch black space, while someone else prefers to wake up to natural light. Even a seemingly small solution such as  having a soft, gloomy light in the bedroom can help prepare our brain for sleep in the evenings and vice versa a bright light in the morning prepares us for an active day. 

 Minimizing visual clutter can help to make the bedroom more peaceful. In Niliaitta, the view from the bed is towards the windows, leaving the rest of the room out of sight. This trick could also be helpful in a tiny apartment, without a separate bedroom, if waking up to seeing your dishes starts to get tiring! 


 How are the individual needs of the customers taken account when designing hotels? 


When you don’t know the end users personally and can’t interview them all, it’s important that the hotel rooms are versatile and easily tailored to the individual. For example, creating different options for lighting can be done with curtain layers, and comfort can be secured by providing a couple of pillows thicknesses to choose from. These can be a deal saver as sleep is a very sensitive thing.  

 When you have two options to choose from , the best option is the one that leaves no one out. For example in our Puistomäki eldercare home, the easy access from the bedroom to bathroom is critical to the ones who have a harder time moving, but also a nice plus for everyone else. When the nightly bathroom trip is safe, easy, and quick, getting back to sleep is simpler. 

 Even though hotels are temporary destinations, we think compromises should be avoided. The spaces should be fully enjoyed for a short stay, but functional for a longer one too. In small spaces even a little mess can cause stress, and when traveling mess can be created fast when digging through your suitcase. In our Jyväskylä hostel the bed is lifted so that under fits a proper storage compartment. Out of sight, out of mind. 



How do sleep and rest show in what Studio Puisto designs? 


Sleep and rest are an important part of our projects as they are a building block for our overall wellbeing. Similarly, having a strong relationship with nature boosts wellbeing and further helps with sleep. Nature provides a variety of triggers for all of our senses that help us to cut away from the hectic everyday life and be more present while getting aware of our actual physical and mental needs. 

 We want to build that relationship with our projects. Our projects draw inspiration from nature, with many of them located in nature. It’s such a great advance, when one goes to bed relaxed and already a bit tired, after a long day spent enjoying the outdoors.  

 In the nature, there is no where near as many disturbances as in the city. Our destinations often have separate lodges, providing you with privacy and peace from neighbors. In a total need of escape to the nature, our Space of Mind cabins can be built even to the most remote places.
