The construction of the new birdwatching hut has started. To preserve the beautiful nature of Vanhankaupunginlahti, the hut is built in Verkkosaari and floated to its spot. It is also possible to move again in the future if needed, leaving the nature behind untouched.
The hut sits at the very end of Vanhankaupunginlahti’s peninsula so it provides great views to both the silt birds in the bay and the rare sea eagle nest on the opposite shore.
The structure of the hut has been inspired by turtles and bunkers. The material larch blends well with the surrounding and the structure shields its visitors. From the safety of the hut, the birds can be observed without disturbance, keeping both the birdwatchers and birds themselves happy.
In this case, blending in with the nature and its bunker-likeness doesn’t make the hut tight and small. In the design process, we found it important to be able to fit a whole class of pupils and their teacher there to learn about the nature. So once the hut is ready, feel free to come enjoy in groups both large and small.
After the hut, the next step of the Vanhankaupunginlahti project is a platform inspired by stony shores, a rest spot alongside the biking trails. So stay tuned – we’re excited to share more on that later.
In a year where everything flipped upside down, we’ve noticed just how important it is to not only find new ways to connect with the nature around us, but also with ourselves.
